Windrush Weather

  • Brief summer returns today!

Monday again brought a wet morning amounting to 5.6mm taking the monthly total to 50.8mm being 77% of the 39-year average. We are half way through the month and have had just three totally dry days. However, the weather is about to change even if only for three days. The southwesterly breeze became very gusty during the afternoon with a peak gust of 25mph.

The past night was much cooler with a low of 10.1C , which was 1.7C below the average and after the wet morning produced a very heavy dew.

The barometric pressure is rising rapidly thanks to a temporary ridge of high pressure building for the next three days. As a result Tuesday arrived with welcome strong sunshine that lifted the temperature to 15.7C by 08.00 with the barometric pressure reading 1016.0mb at that time. As the depression relocates and the high pressure asserts itself the wind will veer a few degrees to come principally from the west today. By 08.30 broken cloud began to arrive that interrupted the sunshine from time to time.

  • Changeable – what else is there to say!

Showers and short intervals of sunshine summed up the weather on Sunday with another 6.2mm of rain from the daytime showers and more rain just after midnight. That took the monthly total 45.2mm being 69% of the long-term average. It was a cool day, thanks to the minimal sunshine with the thermometer not rising above 20.1C, which was 2.5C below average. We have only had three days this month when the maximum rose above the long-term average. Due to the thick cloud cover and ongoing moist southwesterly airstream it was another mild night with a minimum of 14.9C, which was 2.9C above the average and identical to the previous night.

The depression that was centred off the west coast of Scotland has begun to ease away but another over North Wales has taken its place. As a result Monday dawned dull with light rain and a more consistent and heavier period from 07.30 to 08.10. The barometric pressure has fallen away to 1009.6mb by 08.00.

  • Return to sunshine and showers

There was limited sunshine between the showers on Saturday with heaver rain later evening that in total amounted to 5.3mm taking the monthly total 39.0mm when the average is 65.6mm. The maximum of 21.4C was 1.2C below the average thanks to the very brisk southwesterly wind gusting to 27mph and limited sunshine. Overnight was the opposite with a low of 14.9C being 3.1C above the 39-year average.

Sunday dawn dull and warm as the depression is still close by, off the west coast of Scotland, so the moist, warm southwesterly breeze continues.

  • Another weekend, another depression

Friday was the last of the very warm, sunny days that saw the thermometer climb to 25.2C being 2.5C above the average. The warm, moist air was brought on the brisk southwesterly breeze, gusting to 19mph. The past night was mild thanks to the advance cloud from the new derision, with a low of 13.9C, which was 2.1C above the average.

Saturday had a little brightness first thing, even brief bursts of sunshine but by 07.40 thick cloud hade totally covered the sky obscuring any further sunshine. Yet again the weekend will be blighted with anther depression, currently centred off the west coast of Scotland, thus the southwesterly breeze continues. The routine of sunshine and showers is back!

  • Summer at last!

Thursday felt like summer at last as the many hours of strong sunshine boosted the temperature to 25.8C at 16.04. This was 3.2C above the 39-year average and the warmest day since 7th July (27.9C). The warm, moist air continued overnight giving us a muggy, very warm night. The thermometer did not drop below 17.2C, which was 5.4C above the average and the warners night since 3rd August 2022.

Friday was initially overcast with some brightness but by 07.30 the sun began to shine strongly between breaks in the cloud. The ridge of high pressure is beginning to fall away, 2mb over the last day, which will see the a lower maximum temperature today and the wind veering into the southwest after south for much of Thursday.
