Thursday 15th January
The temperature on Wednesday morning was very slow to rise after the very sharp frost that gave us a minimum of -3.4C, it then yo-yoed. By 10.00 the thermometer still read -3.0C under the clear sky.The bonus was a very sunny morning that saw the thermometer eventually rise to 6.1C by 14.00, there was then a mild drop in warmth before the temperature rose again in the evening peaking at 20.18 with a high for the day of 8.8C being 1.7C above average. An unusual twenty-four hours.
Thursday arrived dark and gloomy again due to advance cloud from an extensive, warm weather front that will bring steady rain for much of the daylight hours with a likely substantial total. There is a yellow warning from the Met Office of heavy rain until 22.00 in the north, but around 17.00 for us.
The next few days will bring unsettled weather as we will be under the control of several low-pressure systems arriving from the west, tomorrow the forecast is for three systems to surround the UK. Friday and Saturday are likely to be the better days as a high pressure system to the east over the Continent tries to exert itself before being overcome by a succession of depressions arriving from the west. This will result in more cloud and variable rain arriving on Sunday and into the first part of the following week. The air flow will vary between south and southeast, never a cold flow of air, as a result temperatures by day and night are likely to hold just above average for January, with the absence of night frosts.
