Atlantic weather pattern sets in

Monday 27th October
Sunday was an unusual day as regards temperatures. It felt very chilly in the brisk westerly breeze during the morning that limited the rise in temperature to 10.0C by 13.00. Surprisingly, the thermometer then eased downwards during the afternoon to reach a low of 8.1C at 17.00. There was then an about turn as the temperature slowly rose again, against the norm for an autumn evening, to reach a daily maximum of 11.1C at 22.25. I studied several radar charts during the evening and could not see the reason for this unusual pattern, other than the breeze picked up a just a little. During the rest of the night there was a slow fall in temperature to reach a low of 8.9C at 06.58, just after sunrise in Marlborough at 06.51. The high was 3.6C below average whereas the low was 1.5C above average.

Monday arrived with sunshine just after sunrise between variable cloud cover. The wind had backed a few degrees to come from the northwest and west-northwest all day.

The remainder of the week will see the UK under an Atlantic weather pattern with sunshine and showers and near average temperatures. This morning the forecast was for six centres of low pressure to develop around the UK by Wednesday, bringing unsettled weather.

The tropical Storm Melissa, now in the Caribbean, unexpectedly began to increase in intensity during Saturday. It was then named Hurricane Melissa with winds forecast to rise to 140mph and a metre of rain forecast to fall that will result in extensive damage from the hurricane force winds and flash flooding from the life-threatening storm surge.
