Windrush Weather

  • Wednesday was a wet, dreary and cool day. Not summer!

The rain and drizzle on wednesday continued for most of the day, relaxing just before 5pm when there was a very brief bright interlude with 8 minutes of strong sunshine.

There were no periods of intense rainfall, fortunately, as the twenty-four hour period produced 3.5mm.

Not surprisingly it was another very cool day with a maximum of only 15.4C, being a significant 5.3C below the average, only reached late afternoon as the sun broke through, the day had been mainly around 13C.

As the cloud broke during the night the thermometer fell swiftly to a minimum of 8.6C. which was 3C below the average and the coldest night since June 14th.

This morning is a totally differently day, thankfully, due to a ridge of high pressure. The sun shone strongly after dawn raising the temperature to 12.2C at 08.00.

  • Changeable they say. No change here day by day with frequent rain and little sun!

    Tuesday:
Maximum: 5.3C below average at 15.4C, lowest for over two months
Rain: Another 3.3mm bringing the August total to 26.5mm
UV: Down to 3.1, which is only ‘Moderate” and lowest for almost a month
    Sunshine: Just 4 minutes!

    Overnight:
Minimum: Just about average with 11.9C at 08.00 due to the thick, low cloud and rain

    This morning:
Temperature: At 08.00 was 11.9C, the lowest since 29th June
Humidity: At 08.00 was 97%, being highest for almost a fortnight
Thick, low cloud producing drizzle and light rain.
To add insult to injury the wind veered into the north yesterday and remains there today.

  • Will summer return?

With the maximum on monday 2C below the August 33-year average, maximum of only 18.8C, a cloudy day with only 14 minutes of sunshine and rain returning in the evening and overnight, it really feels like early autumn.

A light shower occurred late evening but just before 5am more substantial rain fell giving a total for the past twenty-four hours of 2.1mm.

This morning it is dull with thick cloud and light drizzle. The thermometer has been falling steadily since just after 5pm yesterday to produce the coolest morning, at 08.00, for over a month with an ambient temperature of 12.4C. Because of the thick cloud it was a mild night being 0.9C above the August average.

  • A dry and sunny day before the rains return!

Sunday produced 7.5 hours of strong sunshine and the highest solar energy for almost a fortnight.

Sadly, the very brisk south-westerly wind, gusting to 20mph, kept the temperature down with a maximum of 20.3C at 14.42, which was 0.4C below the 33-year average but up a degree on the Friday peak. The strong sun also meat the the UV level just crept into the ‘Vey High’ category again.

An initially mainly clear sky overnight meant that the thermometer dropped to its lowest at 02.08 this morning with a minimum of 12.3C, just above average, but some 4C higher than the very cool night previously. At this time increasing cloud from the west stopped the temperature from falling further in advance of another weather front.

Today dawned with thick, low cloud and the threat of rain.

  • Is it Autumn? Coolest night for three months

The 5.6 hours of strong sunshine on saturday was very welcome but did nothing for the temperatures as the maximum was 1.3C below the August average of 19.4C. The modest breeze from a westerly direction and the build up of cloud meant the peak was again just after midday at 13.50.

There were several sharp showers during the daytime amounting to 1.5mm, which brings the August total to 21.1mm with the August 33-year average being 66.6mm.

The barometric pressure is still rising. At 08.00 this morning the reading was 1022.5mb thanks to a ridge of high pressure, which meant that the sky stayed mainly cloud free overnight allowing any warmth to radiate into the atmosphere and giving us the coolest night, at 8.2C, since 21st May.
