  • Exceptionally mild night due to rain bands and southerly winds

    The southerly winds, peaking at 22mph on Wednesday, meant a warm day with the maximum of 21.4C being 0.7C above the August average.

    The strong sunshine was reduced to 3.8 hours compared to 9 hours on Tuesday, bringing the total for August to 70 hours.

    The first rain band arrived at 22.15 last night and lasted for almost half hour. The second longer and heavier rain band arrived just after 02.30 this morning producing a total of 6.6mm. The rainfall for August now stands at 39.0mm, being 59% of the August average.

    It was an exceptionally mild night with the thermometer not dropping below 14.7C at 00.30.

    The hang back of cloud from these weather fronts is much in evidence this morning with the thick cloud easing eastwards and showing signs of breaks in the cloud layer.

    The thermometer has risen even higher so that at 08.00 it read 17.0C.

  • Warmer by day but colder by night

    Tuesday produced the warmest day since 25th July wth a maximum of 21.9C, which was 1.2c above the average and the fourth successive warmer day. We enjoyed 9 hours of strong sunshine with brisk winds peaking at 17mph. It was a dry day, only the seventh this month.

    The night was cool, vey cool, with a minimum of just 7.2C being 4.3C below the August average. With no sun at dawn this depressed the temperature resulting in a fresh morning with the coolest start to the day ay 08.00 since 8th June as the thermometer has struggled to reach 9.9C.

    This morning there is moderate cloud obscuring the sun with almost still conditions.

  • What a difference a change of wind direction makes!

    With the wind, very brisk at times giving a maximum of 20 mph, having backed into the south on Monday, the maximum temperature at 15.10 was 21.6C, the warmest day since 25th July. It was most welcome to have a warner day but keeping it in perspective it was only 0.9C above the August average.

    It was another dry day, predominately cloudy, but with 1.04 hours of strong sunshine.

    Not only was the maximum above average but also the minimum overnight as the cloud and southerly air, the wind dropped out, gave us a minimum of 12.0C. It was the warmest night for a week being just above the August average and 5C above the previous night’s minimum.

    Just after midnight there were a couple of showers amounting to 2.0mm bringing the total for August to 32.4mm, almost 50% of the monthly average.

  • Coolest morning for two months – a touch of early Autumn!

    Sunday was a glorious day with 7.9 hours of strong sunshine, mainly in the morning, as cloud built up after 2pm. The strong sunshine raised the thermometer to a maximum of 21.4C. the warmest day for three weeks and 0.7C above the August average.

    Another dry day with light winds, peak gust being 10mph, and the calmest day since 29th June.

    Clear skies meant another cool night with the thermometer dropping to 6.9C at 05.21 producing the coolest night since 6th June.

    This morning dawn with low cloud and mist over the Marlborough Downs but just before 8am the sun broke through occasionally raising the temperature at 08.00 to 11.2C

  • Coldest night for three months BUT glorious morning

    With 4.4 hours of strong sunshine, UV level back into the ‘High’ level and the maximum rising again to 20.7C, average for August, Saturday was a very pleasant day. Also, there was no rain.

    With a clear sky overnight the thermometer dropped continuously to a minimum of just 6.8C, 8C below the previous night. This was the coolest night since 11th May and almost 5C below the August average.

    This morning we are enjoying a glorious start to the day with much strong sunshine after dawn and the thermometer recovering to 12.2C at 08.00.
