  • Record broken for the hottest day in the month of May

    Monday saw the thermometer rise steadily to a maximum of 28.1C, a record high for a day in May, breaking the previous high of 27.8C set on 24.05.2010 and 11.3C above the 34-year average.

    There was a light breeze, then from the east, which moderated the heat that the 14.0 hours of strong sunshine provided.

    The UV level fell slightly from the peak on Sunday but still in the ‘High’ category.

    As a consequence of the hot days and warmer nights, last night’s minimum was 8.3C being 1.3C above the average, the soil temperature at a depth of 5cm was 15.1C at 08.00 this morning.

    Tuesday has dawned with misty conditions and sunshine from the start of the day. However, with the barometric pressure having fallen over the last three days, to its lowest this month, a change in our weather pattern is underway.

  • Warning – UV at ‘Very High’ level

    Sunday gave us a very warm and sunny day with 15.25 hours of strong sunshine, the sunniest day since May 6th last year. As a result of this extensive and strong sunshine the UV level rose into the ‘Very High’ category, not seen since the beginning of August last year.

    The thermometer soared to a maximum of 25.3C being 8.5C above the 34-year average. It was a much warmer night with the lowest temperature of 7.1C, which was average for early May.

    When readings were taken at 08.00 this morning the temperature had recovered to 14.5C heralding another very sunny and hot day with the UV level expected to again rise into the ‘Very High’ category.

    Monday update at 13.00: heat surpasses peak of Sunday with current temperature of 25.5C. Gentle easterly breeze has sprung up to moderate heat. UV currently at ‘High’.

    RECORD BROKEN at 16.20 today: thermometer reached 28.1C, which passed the previous record set on 24.05.2010 of 27.8C for any day in May including Mayday.

  • Sun from dawn to dusk on Saturday

    What a glorious day we enjoyed on Saturday! There were 14.5 hours of strong sunshine, the highest daily total since 5th July, from cloudless skies that existed from dawn to dusk.

    As a result of the sunshine and light winds, maximum gust of 10mph, the thermometer reached a peak of 22.9C, which was 6.1C above the 34-year May average.

    Not surprisingly, the UV level soared to 6.6, not seen since 17th August last year.

    The clear skies continued overnight allowing the warmth to radiate into space causing the thermometer to drop to a low of 4.6C just before dawn.

    By 08.00 on Sunday we had already received 2 hours of strong sunshine and the thermometer recovered to 12.7C.

    Sunday update at 13.00: UV level edges up to ‘High’ level with temperature currently 22.4C.

    Sunday saw the temperature peak at 25.3C, being 8.5C above average but also noteworthy was the UV level rose to the ‘Very High’ category.

  • Cloudy Friday was disappointing

    Friday was a cloudy day with a glimmer of sunshine, just 5 minutes. The maximum of 16.8C was average for May and exactly the same as on Thursday, which was far more sunny.

    There was very little wind on Friday, which made it a very pleasant day with a maximum gust of only 9mph. The wind dropped out entirely after 22.20 and is totally still at 08.00 this morning.

    As the cloud cover slowly cleared from the east last night that could be clearly seen late evening, the thermometer fell away to a minimum of 4.3C at 05.40: by 08.00 it had recovered to 10.3C.

    Saturday dawned with full sunshine as the sun rose over the horizon and with the anticyclone at its highest pressure this morning with a reading oof 1025.5mb, the highest for three weeks, there is promise of a superb day.

    Saturday update at exactly 16.00: maximum of 22.4C.

    Saturday maximum of 22.9C at 16.57, which is 6.1C above the average.

  • A little welcome warmth returns

    Thursday was the warmest day since 22nd April with a maximum 16.8C, just average for early May. This improvement was due to the wind moderating and backing into the southwest.

    It was dry day with 8.78 hours of strong sunshine.

    A mostly cloudy and mild night followed with the thermometer not falling below 8.8C being 2C above the average.

    Friday has arrived with a mostly cloudy sky and the occasional burst of sunshine and the thermometer at 08.00 rising to 10.6C. The air this morning is much drier with humidity of 87% at 08.00 in calm conditions.
