Windrush Weather

  • Snow and lots of it!

Snow started to fall Thursday evening at 20.34 and continued overnight into Friday that eased about 09.15.

The very brisk easterly wind on Thursday, gusting to 23 mph, meant a cold day with a maximum of only 1.9C, which was 5.1C below average. There was also significant wind chill later in the day making it feel more like -4C.

Friday arrived with the snow still falling giving a provisional average depth of 8cm.

At such times of considerable snow with drifting in the strong wind, now backed into the north east, the rainfall or on this occasion, precipitation, is not easy to measure. Normally small amounts of snow in the rain gauge can be slowly melted and then measured. However, under current conditions a different method is utilised. The 5cm copper rain gauge is inverted and placed into the snow in three different areas, especially important when there is drifting, to make a best guess at an average depth between deep and less deep-snow. A thin flat object is then placed at ground level and pushed under the snow trapped under the rain gauge. This 5 inch column of snow is slowly melted so that the loss though evaporation is minimised and the subsequent three columns, when melted, are averaged to get the best estimate of equivalent rainfall. The current best estimate is 9.7mm.

Update Friday at 14.00: snow been continuing all morning, currently becoming heavier. Depth at this time around 14cm. Temperature has crept up to 0.3C but fortunately wind abating, now half speed recorded at dawn as barometric pressure rises.

Update at 18.30: after 22 hours of snow thankfully it has almost stopped, just very fine precipitation. Maximum temperature of 0.5C at 15.11.

  • Coldest night for 11 months

Wednesday gave us 7.48 hours of sunshine but the previous night’s hard frost, lying snow in the shade and cool westerly breeze mean that the thermometer struggled to reach a maximum of just 4.0C at 14.03, which was 3C below average.

Overnight the thermometer fell consistently to a minimum of -7.2C, recorded at 04.38 Thursday morning, since when it has risen slightly to read -6.2C at 08.00 this morning. It was the coldest night since 28th February 2018.

Thursday saw the sun shining in a clear sky as it crossed the horizon.

Update on Thursday at 16.00: thermometer struggled to get above freeing at midday then to a maximum currently of 1.9C. Cloud still high with humidity low at 84% indicating weather front & precipitation some way off as barometer continues to fall rapidly

Update at 20.33: first light snow flakes starting to fall. Current temperature of 0.2C.

  • Snow late afternoon on Tuesday

Tuesday brought us 2.7 hours of sunshine but after midday the cloud began to thicken with rain starting at 14.30 that turned to snow from 16.45- 18.05 producing around 2cm in depth. The maximum of 4.9C, being 2.1C below average, occurred at 14.28 before beginning to fall away as the snow arrived that by 18.00 was down to 1C, which allowed some snow on hard surfaces to partially melt.

The skies cleared overnight allowing a hard frost to set in with the minimum temperature of -4.0C at 07.54 this morning, which was 5.3C below average.

The copper rain gauge held much melt water from the snow but had to be brought indoors to slowly melt the remaining ice, which gave a total precipitation of 6.1mm. This brings the January precipitation to 33.6mm, which is 58mm below the 35-year average.

Wednesday saw the sun cross the horizon just after 08.00 that with broken cloud promises more sunshine.

Update on Wednesday at 18.00: thermometer struggled to reach 4.0C today peaking at 14.03, which was 3C below average. There were 7.5 hours of sunshine but the previous night’s hard frost and snow remaining on the ground in shaded areas limited any warmth for the sun.

  • Rainfall just 30% of January average

Monday saw glorious sunshine for 7.5 hours. However, the brisk north westerly breeze, gusting to 24mph, pegged back the temperature to a maximum of only 4.8C, which was 2.2C below average but the wind chill meant it felt a couple of degrees colder.

During the late afternoon and early evening the thermometer steadily fell away producing a minimum of -2.8C at 22.38 before rising slowly throughout the night to above freezing at 08.00 today, Tuesday, with a reading of 1.0C.

Tuesday morning arrived with broken cloud and hazy sunshine in still conditions.

The precipitation so far this month, with three days to go, amounts to just 27.5mm, which is only 30% of the 35-year average or a considerable deficit against the average of 64.3mm. Currently it is the fifth driest January since records began in 1984.

Update on Tuesday at 15.35: after morning brightness light rain started just after 14.30 with the maximum temperature of 4.9C at 14.28. Temperature been falling since, currently reading 3.6C and still falling.

Update at 16.46: rain now turned to snow with temperature currently just 2.2C.

Update at 18.05: snow ceased with 1-2cm lying snow although less remaining on roads as weather front eases away eastwards. Temperature currently 1.0C.

The UV level rose to 0.9, as on Saturday, which was the highest since 18th November as the sun gains strength.

It was a dry day with total rainfall for January at 27.5mm, which is 64mm below the 35-year average. The wind was strong with a maximum gist of 39mph at 13.40.

With clear skies overnight the thermometer dropped to 0uu.3C at 07.03 today Monday, producing a ground frost, which saw the sun rise above the horizon triggering the sunshine recorder at 08.24 and the promise of more throughout the day.
