Autumn arrives prematurely!
With a succession of cool days, 15 below the 30-year August average and exceptionally low minima, it feels as if autumn has arrived. Just before dawn today the thermometer fell to 2.6C, which would for a short time have produced a ground frost.
The total rainfall to date is 77.3mm, which is 120 % of the 30-year average. However, with the forecast of much rain tomorrow, this total will rise considerably. -
Decidedly not summer weather
The last twelve days have brought temperatures several degrees below the 30-year average. Yesterday was the coldest, which had a maximum of only 15.2C that is 6C below the average for August.

Coldest August night since 1993
At 5.42 am today the thermometer dropped to a low of 3.8C, the second lowest August minimum I have recorded since 1984. The record was set at 2.7C on 24th August 1993.

Coldest August day for two years
With a maximum of only 16.9C it was the coldest August day for two years, some 4.5C below the August average. However, August 18th in 2011 holds the record when the thermometer struggled to only 15.2C in the late afternoon as the result of strong north-easterly winds.
