  • UV at ‘Very High’ level

Yesterday the UV levels were at their highest since July last year, not surprising as we are almost at the longest day when it coincides with spells of strong sunshine and clear skies. The reading of 8.9 was recorded at 1330 and is at the top end of the ‘Very High’ range.
The hours of strong sunshine have now reached a total of 103 hours for June and the soil temperature at a depth of 5cm was 18.3C at 0800 this morning.

  • UV at ‘Very High’ level for third day in June

Yesterday the thermometer peaked at 22.3C and the UV reached the ‘Very High’ category for the third time this month. The warmer days and nights (minimum 10.8C) have meant that the soil temperature at a depth of 5cm was reading 16.9C at 0800, the highest value since July 2014.

  • Eventually daily maximum and minimum exceed mean for June

The very warm sunshine yesterday, with light winds (maximum 14mph) brought the maximum to 20.2C and this daytime warmth was trapped under the increasing cloud cover overnight to provide a minimum of 9.8C. The UV level was high as for the previous day.

  • Evaporation greatly exceeds rainfall

The total precipitation this month is 13.8mm (25% of the average for June) but the moisture that has evaporated into the atmosphere from the ground, water surfaces and plants amounts to 47mm.

  • High pressure starts to exert an influence after dull, wet day

Yesterday was dull and damp with a total of 1.9mm of rainfall overnight and the lowest solar activity for a month. This morning, just after 0400, the barometer started to rise again, the wind veered into the north from a westerly direction and as a result the air temperature dropped 3C over the next hour.
