The tropical air flow over the last two days has brought the warmest day of the month 922nd) with a maximum of 10.8C and the warmest night (24th) with a minimum of 5.7C. However, a further plume of warm air over the last few hours this morning produced a reading of 11.7C at 0800, which is 5C above the maximum long-term mean.

Three dry days then – rain again!
The light rainfall in the early hours of this morning amounted to 1.5mm but brings to an end three consecutive dry days, which was the longest period of dry days since the end of October. The brief sunshine yesterday brought the highest UV level (0.8)since November so the sun’s strength is slowly returning!

Cold spell comes to an end
After the coldest night on tuesday with a minimum of -7.4C the thermometer slowly rose to a maximum of 4.4C yesterday in almost continuous strong sunshine amounting to 5.85 hours. However, after 15.00 the temperature began to drop again to a minimum overnight of -2.4C but increasing cloud cover meant that by 05.30 this morning the air temperature had recovered to move above freezing point reaching 1.6C at 08.00.

The cold deepens
Last night was the coldest night since 12th February 2012 with a minimum of -7.4C. This followed a day with almost continuous strong sunshine, totalling 5.18 hours, with a maximum of 4.0C. The two nights of hard frost have meant that the soil at a depth of 5cm has now frozen with a temperature of -0.6C, the first time it has frozen at this depth since December 2014.

Coldest night for a year
After a cold day yesterday with a maximum of 5.2C. about 1C below the mean, the thermometer starting dropping around 4pm and continued until dawn with a minimum of -6.3C, the coldest night since 24th January 2015. There was a little brightness mid afternoon but no rain in the twenty-four hour period.
