Windrush Weather

  • Wettest day for a month

Intermittent showers during the daylight hours yesterday produced a total of 8.3mm, the wettest day since 10th May, the majority of which fell during a very heavy shower mid-afternoon. In between the showers there was some sunshine and the UV level nudged a little higher, again in the very high category.

  • Highest UV level this year rated ‘Very High’

After the frequent light showers yesterday morning the sun broke through early afternoon when the UV level, just before 14.00, reached the highest since July last year, rated very high. The minimal rainfall over the last twenty-four hours totalled 1.1mm, which brings the total for the month so far to just 6.8mm.
This morning the low pressure that has been over the UK for the past two days reached its lowest pressure of 994.5mb and is slowly starting to rise.

  • Three month low in barometric pressure

The barometric pressure has been dropping steadily for the past two days as a new low pressure system moves over the UK. At 08.00 today the reading was 996.5mb, which is the lowest reading since 28th March. The last twenty-four hours produced no strong sunshine although there were bright periods when the UV level again reached a Very High level. There have been intermittent light rain showers by day and night that amounted to just 2.7mm of rainfall in total. The Marlborough area has again missed the torrential downpours that have afflicted other areas in the UK. It is now almost a month since we had a wind from a south-westerly direction.

  • What a difference a change in wind direction makes

The wind having veered into a southerly direction has brought more humid weather and mild nights. Yesterday morning was dominated by thick cloud with drizzle and light rain that amounted to 1.2mm. However, as the afternoon progressed the cloud thinned and the sun broke through with 3.64 hours of strong sunshine that boosted the thermometer to a maximum of 20.7C and gave the highest UV reading, in the ‘Very High’ category, this year. The barometer continues to drop, a reading of 1002mb at 08.00, indicating the approaching low pressure system. The wind has started to pick up after the recent very calm days with a maximum gust of 18mph, the strongest gust for ten days.

  • Another day with a slack pressure pattern

The slack pressure pattern that has persisted for over a week is beginning to change as the barometric pressure has now dropped to its lowest reading for three weeks to 1007mb at 08.00 today. The strongest gust of wind yesterday was just 10mph. It was a cloudy day with no strong sunshine and occasional drizzle or very light rain showers amounting to a minimal total of 1.2mm for the last twenty-four hours. The UV level, as a result of the cloud cover, dropped to a ‘Moderate’ level yesterday.
