  • Warmest morning for almost a month

The southerly airstream has brought very warm air from the Azores that gave us the warmest day for almost a month with a maximum of 12.7C, which is 5C above the mean for December. Not surprisingly, the overnight minimum was also well above the mean with a low of 9.7C. This occurred just before 8pm last night but there followed fluctuations of the temperature but at 0800 the thermometer read 11.7C, the warmest morning since 15th November
There was a little sunshine yesterday amounting to 0.73 hours but no rain. The wind has picked up after several fairly calm days with a maximum gust of 21mph that was recorded yesterday afternoon and again just before dawn.

  • No sun, no UV, no evaporation, no rain – just thick fog!

There are very few days in the year when there is no measurable UV light. Yesterday was the first since February 17th. The thick fog, with visibility down to less than 100m that developed overnight, only lifted a little during the day with visibility extending to around 700m by mid-afternoon. Due to the thick fog there was no evaporation, the first occasion that this has happened in 2016.
The slow change in the warmer, moister air from the Azores meant that the thermometer began to rise after dawn, from 3.9C to 9C at dusk. Overnight the thermometer continued to rise with a maximum of 10.2C. This is the highest reading since 21st November.
There were extended periods yesterday when the air was totally still with occasional gusts in single figures. However, as the night wore on there were several readings into double figures with a maximum gust of 15mph just befit 9pm.

  • Very still conditions and increasing humidity bring thick fog by morning

With a maximum of just 6.0C yesterday it was the coldest day of the month and the coldest since 20th November. We did enjoy 1.1 hours of sunshine in very still conditions with a maximum gust of just 8mph but there were periods when the air was still.
Overnight the increasing humidity and still conditions has produced thick fog this morning with visibility down to less than 100 metres and a temperature of 3.9C at 08.00.

  • Sun and frost but about to change

Another gloriously sunny day yesterday with 5.65 hours of strong sunshine, however the temperature was still depressed with a maximum of 6.8C, which is 1C below the mean for December. Overnight the clear skies meant another frost, this time down to a minimum of -1.2 that occurred at 04.36.
This morning has dawned bright with hazy sunshine allowing the thermometer to rise to -0.7C at 08.00. After the low humidity yesterday it has been rising steadily since midnight heralding a change in the weather later today as the high pressure begins to lose its influence as a depression approaches from the Atlantic.

  • Winds begin to veer into the east

Saturday brought 1.4 hours of sunshine but the wind started to veer into the east, which meant that the the temperature was again depressed with a maximum of 6.8C. Overnight the thermometer dropped to its lowest just after 6am with a low of 0.9C.
A bright start and sunny morning has followed with the wind increasing in strength after around 9am.
