Windrush Weather

Author: Eric Gilbert

  • First dry day for a fortnight

After so many wet days it was good to have a dry day yesterday although the large amounts of cloud reduced the sunshine again to 1.5 hours. Interestingly, the wind picked up just before midnight with the strongest gust of the day of 19mph at 23.07 and this windy period lasted until after 3am this morning.
There followed another cool night with a minimum of 2.2C, not as cold as the previous night, just above the average for March. This morning has dawned with high cloud and the sun struggling to provide a bright start to the day.

  • Coldest night this month giving ground frost

More of the same yesterday with sunshine and sharp showers. There were just 2.3 hours of strong sunshine on Sunday, half the number of hours that were recorded on Saturday. There were a few brief, very sharp showers amounting to 5.1mm. The showers and increased cloud amounts kept the temperature down to a maximum of 9.7C but clearer skies overnight meant that the thermometer dropped to 0.9C just before 7.30 this morning giving a slight and temporary ground frost.

  • Ninth consecutive wet day

Saturday was less sunny than Friday but did produce 2.3 hours of welcome strong sunshine. There were brief showers mid-afternoon and more starting before dawn, totalling 6.8mm. The temperature was spot on the average at 10.3C but fell away overnight to a minimum of 3.9C.

  • Dismal day with over eight hours of rain

The weather on Friday and Thursday contrasted like chalk and cheese. After the blue skies and almost seven hours of sunshine on Thursday, the warm front crossing the UK on Friday brought over eight hours of rain that in total measured 10.9mm. A brisk south-easterly wind, maximum 18mph, and the thick, low cloud kept the temperature down to a maximum of 9.9C, just below the average for March.
This morning is a great improvement with thin, high cloud allowing weak sunshine at 08.00. The thermometer dropped to a low of 4.2C just before 7.30am.

  • Thursday was the sunniest day for five months

Thursday was such a treat with 6.89 hours of strong sunshine and moderating winds. The strongest gust was 27mph but moderating as the day progressed. We have to go back in the records to 8th August when the humidity was down to 77% at 08.00, dropping to 50% mid-afternoon.
Rain set in just after 5am this morning as the warm front began to cross our area.
