  • Strongest wind gust for almost a month

Friday by day and night was again very mild. The maximum reached was 10.6C (+2.8C) and a very high minimum of 9.0C (+7.1C). Another 1.3mm of precipitation raised the rainfall total to 103.0mm.

A peak gust of wind was recorded at 42mph.

Saturday arrived with the cloud beginning to thin and break up and the wind very light.

  • Second wettest month in 2018 – so far!

There were occasional showers during daylight hours on Thursday but more substantial rain occurred overnight that brought the November total to 101.7mm. This was 11.7mm above the 34-year average and the second wettest month in 2018 after the soggy March, which gave us 130.9mm. However, there are still 11 days left in December so that total might be overtaken. Water is now showing where the River Kennet rises at Winterbourn Monkton, the first time since the summer.

It was a mild day but exceptionally mild overnight so that by 05.37 this morning the thermometer has risen to 11.8C, which was almost 10C above the average minimum and 4C above the average maximum. By 08.00 this had dropped back to 10.4C.

Friday arrived with thick cloud but signs of this breaking as the latest rain band eased away to the east.

Update on Friday at 14.40: strong wind with maximum gust of 42mph at 11.08. Very mild with temperature hovering around 10.3C all day being 2.6C above average and dry.

  • Second sunniest day this month on Wednesday

With 6.06 hours of sunshine on Wednesday it was the second sunniest day since 14th (6.28 hours).

The sunshine and southerly breeze meant another above average day (+0.7C) with a maximum of 8.5C. Likewise, the overnight minimum was above average with 5.1C (+3.2C).

More rain fell between 2 and 6 am today producing 3.5mm of precipitation taking the monthly total to 92.8mm when the average is 90.0mm.

Thursday arrived with the thickest cloud easing away to the east leaving broken cloud and a temperature of 6.6C at 08.00.

  • Tuesday wettest day in 4 months

The very wide and slow moving rain band arrived around noon on Tuesday and continued for 8 hours with more rain overnight. The daily total was 17.6mm making it the wettest day since 26th August (18.8mm). This brought the rainfall amount for December to 89.3mm, which is almost exactly the average (90.0mm).

Not surprisingly there was no sunshine nor UV light. The temperature, around 7C by day, dropped to 5.0C at 23.00, which was 3.1C above average.

Wednesday arrived with the cloud thinning as the weather front eased away to the east.

Update on Wednesday at 15.55: 6 hours of sunshine, second sunniest this month and no rain with maximum temperature of 8.5C being 0.7C above average.

  • Second sunniest day this month and dry.

Monday brought us 5.72 hours of sunshine and a mild, dry day with the thermometer well above average with a maximum of 9.9C (+2.1C).

Overnight thick cloud meant that the thermometer varied little with a reading of 9.3C (+7.4C) at 08.00 Tuesday morning.

Currently, the wind has been rising with a gust of 29mph and the first rain drops falling just before 08.00.

Update on Tuesday at 17.50: maximum wind gust of 34mph at 10.52. Rain total for the past six hours, and still falling, already into double figures due to very slow moving, wide rain band.

Further update at 19.15. Backedge of rainband just exiting the area after 14mmm of precipitation. Temperature slowly falling, currently 6.3C, after being a degree warmer by day. Wind dropped out.
