  • Little sunshine and much less rainfall yesterday

Yesterday was an improvement on the previous three days that were so wet and overcast. Monday brought only 0.6mm of rainfall and 1.05 hours of welcome strong sunshine.

  • Torrential rain yesterday peaked at 25mm/hour

Yesterday was the third day without sunshine this month and the third day with a substantial rainfall total. The torrential rain just before noon fell at the rate of 25mm/hour at its peak with the total for the day of 10.9mm. The rainfall total for the three days of January stands at 24.5mm. Clearing skies overnight meant a minimum of 5.3C just before 4am.

  • Wettest day for nearly three months

Yesterday brought many hours of rainfall totalling 18.3mm, the wettest day since 5th October. This brings the total for December to 76.5mm, which is 84% of the long-term average. The gales persisted throughout the morning but began to subside towards midday with a peak gust of 47mph at 08.58. As the sky cleared in the evening the thermometer dropped to a minimum of 5.9C.

  • Yesterday was the second sunniest this month with high winds today

With 4.19 hours of strong sunshine, yesterday was the second sunniest after 9th December (4.28 hours). But the advancing storm brought increasing winds overnight with a maximum gust of 46 mph just after 7am. The record gust for December was set on 23rd December in 2013 with a maximum gust of 52mph.

  • Rainfall still much below average for month

With only four dry days this month it is surprising that the total rainfall for December is much below the long-term average of 91.8mm with the current total of just 56.7mm (62%). Yesterday gave us a brief glimmer of strong sunshine in the early morning of 0.02 hours, the first for four days. With three days left of December the mean temperature is going to be in the order of 5 or 6 degrees above the long-term average, which would be a record.
