Yesterday was an appalling day with rain for over 20 hours and persistent strong winds. The daily rainfall total was 22.7mm, the wettest day since 24th July 2015 and with peak gusts of wind to 46mph late afternoon, the strongest for over a month. Overnight the cloud cover thinned allowing the thermometer to drop to 3.2C just before 06.00.

Rain and strong winds return
The barometric pressure has been falling continuously for almost two days, from a high of 1030mb to 998mb this morning due to another intense area of low-pressure arriving from the Atlantic. Overnight the rainfall has been sporadic and light amounting to 4.8mm but wind strength has been rising again with a peak of 30mph. The air is warm with a minimum of 8.1C overnight when the mean is 1.2C but rising to 9.3C at 08.00.

Return to wet and cloudy weather
After four days with some sunshine today dawns cloudy and damp with a light shower early morning of 0.3mm. Yesterday was another very mild day with a maximum of 12.4C, some 5C above the 32-year mean with a minimum of 8.1C overnight.

Sunshine and ground frost
Yesterday brought 3.34 hours of intermittent but welcome sunshine with a maximum temperature of 8.4C, which is 1C above the average for January. Overnight the minimum was 1.4C that occurred just after 3am.

Gale force winds and more rain
The fringe effect from storm Gertrude brought more rain yesterday, amounting to 7.8mm, which brings the monthly total to 110.9mm (125%). It was also very windy throughout the day with a peak gust of 41mph just after 11am.
