  • All change again

    We have have enjoyed three days without rain, the first such event for a month, and two days with considerable strong sunshine, yesterday totalled 6.1 hours. With the wind changing from the north to the south yesterday, the sky became milky and clouds started to bubble up after lunch. This morning the rain returned just after 08.00 after a minimum overnight temperature of 3.2C, so no frost.

  • Blue sky, sunshine and no rain!

    Yesterday was a winter’s day with much blue sky, passing patchy cloud and 6.72 hours of strong sunshine. The wind was quite strong with gusts to 20mph producing a wind chill of several degrees. The maximum temperature was 5.2C but after midnight the slight air frost that had set in deepened considerably to a low of -5.6C at dawn. The highest barometric pressure for four months was set at around 4am with a reading of 1036mb.

  • Rising barometric pressure brings sunshine but colder

    The barometric pressure has been rising for almost two days, which is resulting in clearer skies, some sunshine but lower temperatures. Yesterday we enjoyed 1.33 hours of strong sunshine with the promise of much more today. The thermometer dropped to a minimum of -0.8C overnight after a maximum of 5.6C yesterday. The quite strong wind gusts, up to 25mph, resulted in noticeable wind chill making the temperature feel several degrees below those shown on the thermometer.

  • Rain and more rain from cold north-easterly winds

    Yesterday was a miserable day with cold north-easterly winds peaking at 21mph bringing almost continuous light rain all day and a wind chill that meant the temperature felt like -1C.The maximum temperature was just 3.6C (mean is 7.1C) and the rainfall amounted to 4.1mm.

  • An easterly wind is a rare event this winter

    Yesterday the wind veered into an easterly direction making this only the fourth day it has come from this compass point in four months. This is unusual for winter but the last months have been dominated by consecutive depressions moving in from the Atlantic. We enjoyed brief interludes of sunshine yesterday amounting to 1.15 hours and the highest UV level since mid-November. Rainfall total was minimal at 0.7mm
    This morning the temperature at 08.00 was 2.5C that combined with winds up to 18mph is producing a significant wind chill making it feel more like -1C.
