Yesterday brought a little sunshine amounting to 0.34 hours after two overcast days. Overnight the wind dropped out with barely a movement of air after midnight that with a clearing sky produced a touch of grass frost before dawn and a minimum of 0.2C. This morning broke with glorious sunshine, with just a hint of air movement and the temperature of 4.2C at 08.00.

Dry north-easterly winds persist
Although the wettest day this month brought 27mm of rainfall, the persistent dry winds from the north east have given us eleven dry days with evaporation totalling 20mm. Again yesterday, the thick cloud cover depressed the maximum to 7.4C (mean 10.4C), brought us no sunshine, but with a minimum of 4.1C (mean 1.9C) no frost occurred.

Blocking high pressure still depressing temperatures
The maximum temperature yesterday was 5.9C, almost 5C below the average for March. However, the thick cloud cover overnight meant a minimum of 4.5C, the highest this month, but the wind chill factor made this feel like 2C. After several months with above average monthly temperatures, March to date has an average maximum of 2C below the long-term average.

Sharp frost after maximum temperature returns to double figures
Thursday brought 9.15 hours of strong sunshine, which raised the maximum to 10.1C. The strong north-easterly winds (maximum gust of 21 mph) meant that this was still below the average for March. Overnight, there was a sharp air frost with a minimum of -2.0C.

Significant wind chill overnight
Although the minimum air temperature overnight was 1.1C in the early hours, strong north-easterly winds gusting to 21mph gave a wind chill factor of -2C. Yesterday brought 4.62 hours of strong sunshine although the day started with thick fog and visibility down to 100 metres. The UV value crept a little higher at 3.5.
