The warm, moist air brought thick, low cloud yesterday, which only thinned late afternoon with no sunshine. The maximum yesterday was 21.9C, 3C above the mean for September. The temperature at 08.00 this morning was 18.7C, which equals the mean maximum daily temperature for September with the soil temperature at a depth of 5cm also 18.7C at 08.00. A brief shower early morning of 0.3mm brings the total for September to 17.9mm.

No sun, more rain
Yesterday was the first day for a month that no strong sunshine was recorded. Overnight, just after 01.30, drizzle fell with heavier showers just before 03.00, amounting to 4.4mm. The overnight minimum, at 13.9C, was exactly the same as the previous morning and 5C above the long-term mean. The wind strength was far lower yesterday, peak of 19mph, than the previous day which had a maximum gust of 31mph.

Substantial rain yesterday and more overnight
The rain set in just after midday yesterday and was very heavy late afternoon. With more showers before dawn the total recorded was 12.6mm. Mild southerly air has maintained the temperatures with 18.7C yesterday and a minimum of 13.9C overnight.

Drizzle in afternoon and fog in the morning
Yesterday was such a contrast to thursday with just brief glimpses of sunshine and intermittent drizzle in the afternoon that totalled 0.6mm. However, maximum and minimum temperatures were both a degree above the mean for September. The temperature dropped rapidly just after 5am this morning causing fog to form with visibility down to 400m, slowly dispersing just before 8am.

Glorious first day of meteorological autumn
For convenience when dealing with statistics the season of autumn begins on 1st September for meteorologists. Yesterday produced 7.43 hours of strong sunshine and the thermometer soared to 22.0C, well above the mean for September. Cloud cover overnight meant that it was a warm night with a minimum of 13.1C but a light drizzle fell just before 08.00.
