The daily rainfall up to 0800 today totalled 11.9mm which brings the figure for May to 69.8mm, which is 120% of the average for May with several days of unsettled weather to come. Thunder was heard at 1345 yesterday as a storm centre passed to the east of us.
Not surprisingly with winds from a more easterly direction and just one hour of direct sunshine, temperatures were depressed on thursday – a maximum of just 16.1C was reached just after midday.

Hottest day
Yesterday proved to be the hottest day since early September when the thermometer peaked at 25.1C. Due to cloud cover over night it was quite warm with a minimum of 12.8C. A brief shower produced 0.4mm of rain.
The rate of evapotranspiration increased again yesterday and with the equivalent of 4.91mm of water vapour escaping back into the atmosphere it was the highest rate since mid July 2013. -
High temperatures declining
The hottest day of the year was over the weekend when the thermometer peaked at 23.1C. with UV levels in the ‘High’ category and just light breezes.
Maximum evaporation occurred on sunday when the equivalent of 4.7mm of water vapour returned to the atmosphere, the highest since August last year.
The barometric pressure has been dropping steadily over the last four days and is now at its lowest for May. -
Temperatures continue to rise
The maximum daily temperature has been rising since a low of 14.0C on the 11th. Yesterday the peak temperature was 22.1C with the UV level on thursday nudging into the ‘Very High’ category.

Temperature and UV levels rising
Yesterday was the warmest day since the end of September with a maximum of 20.4C. UV levels continue to rise, currently in the High category but close to the Very High category.
After so much rain earlier in the month the surface soil is beginning to dry. Yesterday the amount of water vapour returned to the atmosphere from the ground, plants and water surface approached 4mm.
