Sunday 8th gave us 6.76 hours of direct sunshine, which was the sunniest day since 30th September. Today we are trapped under cloud and mist beneath the extensive high pressure system.

The 6th brought highest reading for solar energy since October
The barometric pressure has been rising, almost continuously, since the end of January and is at its highest since the end of December at 1040.4mb this morning.
Friday the sixth brought us 6.6 hours of sunshine and the highest value for solar energy since 28th October.
January brought a total rainfall close the average but due to the consistently high pressure we have had only 1mm of precipitation this month with 4mm evaporating to the atmosphere. -
Strong North-Easterly winds bring drier air and significant wind chill
As the anticyclone drifted closer with a low of 1031mb, the wind veered into a north-easterly direction bringing drier air. The combined effect of strong winds from 15 – 20mph and low temperatures by day and night is currently producing a wind chill factor of -4C with a minimum of -5.4C at 0700 this morning.

Wind chill of -5.1C overnight
A bleak day yesterday with minimal brightness, but no snow, was followed by a low of -2.2C during the night, which combined with a modest wind strength gave a wind chill of -5.1C just before 3am.
The soil temperature at a depth of 5cm is still hovering just above zero. -
Winter: 2cm lying snow and -3C minimum
The maximum air temperature reached yesterday was 2.4C when the long-term average for February is 7.2C.
Overnight snow fell to a level depth of 2cm and the thermometer dropped to -2.9C.
