  • Cold, wet and windy – not May weather

Yesterday was notable for the frequent showers with limited sunshine between the downpours, also depressed temperatures. The maximum temperature was 12.4C, some 4C below the May daytime mean. This was followed by a very cool night when the thermometer dropped to 2.3C, again some 4C below the May mean. Rainfall amounted to 3.9mm bringing the monthly total to 71.2mm and bright sunshine reached 4.76 hours.

  • Cool, wet May continues

The changeable weather continues with the maximum temperature yesterday of only 13.3C, this is over 3C below the mean for May. The daily rainfall amounted to 9.3mm, which brings the monthly total to 67.3mm. This is 112% of the long-term average with 13 days of the month remaining.
There have been intervals of bright sunshine between the showers that totalled 4.6 hours yesterday with UV levels in the ‘High’ category for the last three days.

  • Temporary high pressure brings improved day

The ridge of high pressure (maximum this month) brought a high of 17.4C yesterday and 8.1 hours of bright sunshine. A welcome improvement after the considerable rainfall of previous days.
The mean daytime temperature for the first half of May is 1.5C below the long-term average whereas the nighttime mean is just above average.
Clear skies meant that the thermometer dropped overnight to a minimum of 4.8C.
The UV level was the highest this year at 6.6.

  • Wettest day for eight months

The continuous and heavy rainfall, for over twelve hours yesterday, totalled 17.1mm making it the wettest day since the deluge on 18th September 2014. This brings the total for May (56.5mm) close to the average (59.8mm) for the whole month. Not surprisingly there was no bright sunshine yesterday but we did enjoy the highest solar energy and sunshine this year on the previous day.
