Windrush Weather

Significant change in wind direction later today.

Friday 21st November
A maximum of 4.0C on Thursday, logged at 13.22, was a significant 6.3C below my long-term average making it the coldest day since 13th February 2025. The brisk northwesterly was the culprit, still feeding down the Arctic air, with once again a wind chill that outside made it feel up to 2C below that indicated on a thermometer. Under the cold air stream and a clear sky the temperature began to drop towards dusk reaching 0.1C at 17.58 and then the thermometer did an about turn and began to rise a little reaching 1.4C at 19.29. After that time the temperature began to drop again reaching freezing point (-0.1C) at 23.57 then a minimum of -2.2C at 03.54 being 6.2C below the November average.

The soil temperature at a depth of 5cm has seen the cold begin to penetrate the ground with 4.0C, 0.2C and -0.5C logged at 08.00 over the past three days.

Clear blue skies revealed the start to a new day on Friday with the sun beginning to shine as it struggled to get above the horizon. By 08.00 the temperature had lifted a trifle to read -1.7C.

The anticyclone continued to build over the past twenty-four hours with a rise of 11mb since yesterday and still rising fast, a pressure of 1026.1mb was logged at 08.00, which made it the highest pressure this month.

With very high-pressure over the UK we will have a fine, dry day ahead with several hours of sunshine. The ridge of high pressure is still building, however, later today will see a significant change in the weather pattern. As the ridge of high pressure topples towards the Continent, unsettled weather will edge in from the Atlantic due to a depression threatening the UK. Later today the wind will back from northwest to southwest and then overnight back further into the south. This will herald more unsettled weather with likely sunshine and showers the pattern ahead, combined with a modest rise in temperature, as the flow of Arctic air will be replaced with a warmer but moist Atlantic airstream. It will also mean a cessation of night air frosts.
