Windrush Weather

More of the same this coming week but a little cooler

Sunday 25th January
The rain from the next weather front on Saturday held off until 15.15 although the cloud ahead of the rain arrived just after midday. Another 12.1mm was added to the monthly rainfall that now stands at 125.1mm being 140% of my 4-year record. The usual pattern of above average temperatures by day and night once again gave us mild conditions with a maximum of 8.6C at 12.13 and 5.0C at 23.36 being +1.5C and +3.8C respectively.

Sunday began with bright conditions after overnight rain although more rain is likely starting around mid-day.

Currently the jet steam is very active due to a very large temperature differential over north America with -25C to the north and +25C over Florida. The jet stream is very strong hustling depression after depression across the Atlantic. The situation is likely to continue well into next week, however, temperatures will have dropped back a little from the mild days of last week with maxima closer to the January average as will be the minima, but no beast from the east.

At this time of the year we are aware of the changing weather, checking from time to time in case any exceptional weather is ahead. I thought the recent article might be of interest.

Popular reason for checking weather forecast
Research from the Met Office has revealed that the most popular reason people check the weather forecast is to decide whether to hang out the washing.
Almost half (41.4%) cited laundry as their main motivation, ahead of general curiosity in what the weather is doing for the day (40.6%), and planning outfits or outdoor activities (34.6%).

Other top reasons for checking the forecast
Other popular reasons for checking the weather forecast include:
• Travel and commuting (33.2%)
• Planning events or social activities (30.9%)
• Gardening or housework (29.8%)
The Met Office’s research also found that the UK remains a nation obsessed with the weather. On average, people spend 56.6 hours a year – equivalent to two days and nine hours – talking about it, with 60% saying it’s their go-to small talk topic.
