Although there was a modest breeze from the west on Saturday, a cooler direction, the very welcome sunshine lifted the temperature to a maximum of 21.4C, which was 0.6C above average making it the warmest day this month and the first abject average maximum. However, this was followed by a cool night under clear skies and a cool air stream with a low of 8.9C at 04.54, just after sunrise in Marlborough at 04.50, being 1.3C below average.
After the recent rainfall and now warmer temperatures it was not surprising to see the daily total for equivalent loss of rainfall due to evaporation from plant life and the ground begin to rise again, with a total of 5.3mm on Saturday.
Sunday arrived with glorious sunshine, although a little muted due to thin high cloud. We have a fine dry day ahead.
The breeze today will be from the northwest until late afternoon when it will veer into the northeast. The recent high pressure has migrated northwards, now centred between Iceland and Greenland, that is creating the cooler air flow around its eastern boundary across the UK. The forecast surface pressure charts indicate that the anticyclone will extend over the Continent in coming days but centred mainly to the east of the UK maintaining the fine weather with temperatures around the seasonal average, whilst fending off approaching weather fronts trying too move in from the Atlantic, Tuesday is likely to be cloudier as the depression edges closer.
The Met Office issued a press release on Thursday about moderate to high levels of pollen across England and Wales this weekend, as there will be no rain to wash it out of the atmosphere. The pollen from Pine and Lime trees produce pollen at this time of year.
