    Cold begins to bite!

    Tuesday 18th November
The very brisk wind from the north on Monday brought the real Arctic air, which meant the temperatures by day and night were depressed for late November. The thermometer reached a peak of just 6.6C just after midday at 12.42, thanks to the brief, early afternoon sunshine, being 3.7C below average. It was the coldest day since 17th March.

It was inevitable that the Arctic air and clear skies overnight sent the thermometer into free fall, resulting in a temperature well below freezing. The minimum of -3.8C was logged at 03.13, being a significant 7.8C below the November average. The back track of the radar showed a large area of cloud drifting down from the northwest around 03.00, which explains why the thermometer did an about turn and started to climb with a temperature of +0.3C at 08.00.

The other major factor resulting in the past cold night was the lack of any wind to stir up the atmosphere. The breeze fell calm just after 17.00 on Mondy with the anemometer still stationary at 08.00 on Tuesday.

Tuesday struggled to come into life with total cloud over producing dull and gloomy conditions.

The change in wind direction today, when there is any, will be a very low drift of air from the southwest or west-southwest, resulting in a slightly higher day temperature also overnight as a weather front will be crossing from the northwest bringing more cloud, However, the stream of cold air on a very brisk northwesterly will resume on Wednesday. It won’t be until Saturday that we see any improvement in temperature when more unsettled weather from the southwest is likely to arrive.
